Giving Digest: Rising Above Indifference – A Community Steps Up for Jjaja Namuddu
Ordinarily, fundraising to fix problems created by government negligence isn’t something that sits well with many. After all, why should ordinary citizens bear the weight of correcting systemic failures? But as reality has shown time and again, sometimes humanity demands that we step up—even when those responsible don’t.
Such was the case with Jjaja Namuddu, an elderly woman who found herself at the mercy of a broken system. Thanks to the kindness and generosity of people who refused to look away, she received a lifeline. On a recent visit, UGX 10,500,000 was handed over to her by well-wishers, led by Jim Spire Ssentongo, with the support of Gabriel Buule, AgoraCFR, and many others.
The moment was nothing short of heartwarming. Her nephew, Ronald Mugerwa, stood in awe, confessing that he hadn’t seen his aunt smile in a long time. That simple smile, powered by the compassion of strangers—was a poignant reminder that kindness still exists in a world often clouded by apathy.
In his words, Jim Spire Ssentongo put it best:
"Ordinarily, I don’t support such fundraisings - where government causes damage, and we carry the burden of correcting. But knowing that they wouldn’t care anyway, sometimes we need to nevertheless rise up and be there for the victims. To be human, where the oppressors feel nothing."
As the funds continue to make a difference, the generosity of countless individuals stands as a testament to the power of community and the resilience of the human spirit. Every contribution, no matter how small, has played a part in restoring hope to Jjaja Namuddu’s life.
For those who contributed, she sends her heartfelt gratitude. And to those inspired by this act of collective kindness, the call remains—to stand up, show up, and be human in the face of indifference.
