GIVING DIGEST | Changing Her Story: The Absa KH3-7 Hills Run Champions Access to Education for Girls

What began as a run through Kampala’s iconic hills has grown into a movement for change. The Absa KH3-7 Hills Run, held on Sunday, March 16, 2025, brought together over 6,000 participants in a spirited effort to support girls’ education in Uganda under the powerful theme, “Change Her Story.”

More than a physically demanding race, this event was a declaration of purpose. From the start at Millennium Grounds, Lugogo, runners conquered seven of Kampala’s legendary hills, Kololo, Nakasero, Old Kampala, Namirembe, Rubaga, Lubiri, Nsambya, and Kibuli, each victory marked with a commemorative wristband. Participants didn’t just cross finish lines; they crossed barriers that often keep girls out of school, poverty, early marriage, teenage pregnancy, and limited access to menstrual hygiene.

The top runners, Brian Ategeka and Evas Nasasira, were awarded all-expenses-paid trips to South Africa to compete in the Absa Run Your City Series in Johannesburg, a symbolic and personal reward for running with purpose.

Since its partnership with Kampala Hash House Harriers (KH3) in 2023, Absa Bank Uganda has raised over UGX 500 million to support girl child education. These funds have already made significant impact:

  • UGX 50M to the Joshua Cheptegei Foundation for bursaries

  • UGX 50M to Baylor College’s DREAMS program

  • UGX 30M to Amref Health Africa for menstrual hygiene

  • UGX 60M for bicycles to help girls in rural areas access school

  • UGX 90M to World Vision for menstrual hygiene in Karamoja

Speaking at the event, David Wandera, Interim Managing Director at Absa Bank Uganda, noted, “Your participation strengthens our ambition to be a force for good, reaching and uplifting even more girls in our communities.”

Every kilometer run, every shilling raised, and every wristband earned is part of a bigger mission, to change a girl’s story, open up her world, and empower her future.
