GIVING DIGEST: Every Child Deserves the Best, Uganda Unites for the Autism Awareness Run

Uganda is lacing up for purpose. On April 5th, the Autism Awareness Run will rally communities to challenge stigma, promote early intervention, and celebrate neurodiversity. Spearheaded by Joe Kigozi Academy and key partners, the run kicks off at 6:00 AM from Acres of Fun Preschool in Muyenga. The day will be filled with not just a run, but interactive football games for kids and specialist-led sessions for parents and caregivers, offering real tools for support.

For Joe Kigozi, a father and founder, the event is deeply personal. “Being a parent to an autistic child makes the inspiration for this run clear. As a leader who believes every child deserves the best, you have to take action,” he says. He also announced plans to establish a specialized autism center, reinforcing long-term support for families.

Fredah Nabagunga, Learning Support Coordinator at Kabojja School, echoes the call for compassion: “Autism is not a disease, it’s just a different way of processing.” She champions early diagnosis and acceptance, critical in a country still battling harmful myths and social isolation of families. With prevalence rates nearing 70 in every 10,000 Ugandans, and over 100,000 cases reported in both the central and eastern regions, the time for action is now.

This run isn’t just a race, it’s a movement. A chance for Uganda to stand united for inclusion, awareness, and a future where every child is seen, heard, and supported.

Join the run. Join the change.
